Magnesium / Properties of Magnesium

Lightness: Magnesium is 33% lighter than aluminium. Lightness is a great advantage on a few dimensions: 1. Military use: All man-carriable elements and all vehicle-transfereable items. 2. Reducing the greenhouse effect and oil costs: magnesium automobile parts reduce the weight of trucks and cars which makes for less use of oil and less air polution. 3. Home appliances: ladders, furnitures, shelves made of magnesium are easier to carry, move around and hang. 4. Leisure: ski gear, bicycles, tennis bats, travel equipment etc.

Damping Capacity: The ability of the material to buffer impacts by means of elastic energy. Magnesium has a high damping capacity which gives the material a great advantage in many areas. 1. Automotive parts: During an accident parts made of magnesium will deform while stopping the the distructive energy from getting into the passanger box. 2. Sports: tennis rackets, bows and arrows, rollerblades, bicycles and more: in all cases damping capacity of the material helps to create a more enjoyable activity for the user as well as investing her energy more effectively in her sports. 3. Sound systems: damping capacity in sound systems means high quality, clean, pure music without deformation or trembling. 4. Heavy machinery: From heavy chainsaws to compressors, the making of these machines out of magnesium makes them refined and more accurate.

Electromagnetic Interference (EFM) and Radio Frequency Interference (RFI) abilities: EFM/RFI shielding, in which magnesium has a great capability, gives magnesium great advantages over plastic packaging in the electronic industry for products such as mobile telephones, telephones combining computer units, palm pilots, mobile computers, video cameras, GPS and radar automobile units.  

Full Recycle Ability: Magnesium is easily recycled unlike plastic which packages most of the electronic mobile devices today. In order to use plastic packaging for electronic products such as mobile computers and communication devices it has to be laminated with metalic materials. Because of the lamination these packages cannot be recycled and has to be discarded. Magnesium is easily recycled.

Good Thermal Conductivity: This is essential in products such as heat sinks for large electronic appliances, computers and cameras.

Flexible Processing: Magnesium can be extruded, casted, bent and forged.
